Burning fossil fuels won't end soon. Harmful carbon emissions can end soon with the help of MOFs.
The sharply rising level of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from the burning of fossil fuels, is one of modern civilisation’s greatest environmental concerns. However, generating energy this way will continue to dominate the world’s supply for decades to come. Minimising CO2 emissions is high on the environmentalist’s agenda, however the current methods used for Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) are energy-intensive and extremely inefficient.
MOFs present a solution to this problem, promising a more environmentally friendly alternative by capturing CO2 more efficiently and using less energy in the regeneration process.
The structural tunability of MOFs allows them to be optimised for the specific type of CO2 capture to be performed and potentially even for the specific power plant in which the capture system is to be installed.
